The Oceania and Australian Laser Championships 100 Point Event

In November 2016 the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) changed the Region boundaries from Asia Pacific to Asia and Oceania to align with the International Olympic Council’s (IOC) five continents as represented by the five Olympic rings. More information on this change is available on the Oceania Sailing Federation web site HERE. Following this move the Laser Australian Championship has been extended and renamed the Oceania and Australian Laser Championships.

Our ALCA  Chairman Ken Hurling has been working with Eric Faust Executive Secretary of the ILCA and his team and they have managed to gain agreement that the Oceania and Australian Championships from this year will be a 100 point World Sailing event.

This is a major win for Australian and all other Oceania Laser sailors as this maybe the only World Sailing ranked event in the Southern Hemisphere this coming summer. This is a great opportunity to gain world ranking points for Australia and all other Oceania Laser sailors closer to home.

Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) with its first class facilities is the event host. The event will be held between 27th December 2017 and 4 January 2018. The Notice of Race is available on the RQYS website HERE and online entries will soon be able to be placed HERE.

While accommodation, as always, is at a premium, camping is available at the RQYS. Onsite caravans can be booked via the club – phone (+61) 7 3396 8666. Hotel and motel accommodation is available nearby but it is best to book early to avoid disappointment.

ALCA and Queensland Laser Association (QLA) have assembled a great team of race officers, judges and umpires to make this event a total success and enjoyable for all. For those who are coming early training will be allowed on the course area.

We are expecting this Championship to attract 200 plus entries.

Charter boats will be available from the local Laser Dealer Sail27, and PSA the Oceania Laser builder.

This year the QLA is hosting the Australian Laser Masters at Mooloolaba between 9th and 12th February 2018. The event web site for the Masters event is HERE, the NoR is HERE and online entry is available HERE.
