Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships 2013

Hi to 4.7 sailors
Yachting Australia and state organisations are making moves to streamline a junior development pathway to Olympic Classes.  With Optimist sailing becoming mainstream in most states, timing is opportune. Sailors often choose the 4.7 Laser Olympic class pathway for independence, ease of transport, ease of charter at sailing venues, the high standard of competition; a great platform for development.
For many, the first big event is OAMPS Australian Youth Championship or the Australian Laser Championship. With both of these big events featuring on the the Australian summer calendar behind us, coaches are preparing sailors for state championships.
The Australian Laser Class Association (ALCA) supports a structured junior development pathway, including the merging of the winter and summer seasons and the coordination of key events. 4.7 sailors will be eying the annual Laser 4.7 Youth World Championship, this year in Hungary http://events.laserinternational.org/en/events/overview/100z80. Last Year 11 sailors in the Australian 4.7 team travelled to Buenos Aires to compete, in 2011 – 11 to San Francisco, in 2010 – 12 to Pattaya in Thailand.
ALCA in conjunction with Yachting Australia have been instrumental in promoting the Laser 4.7 and Radial Youth World Championships as key events in the winter calendar. The exposure to large and highly competitive fleets is seen as a foundation in building a globally competitive sailing fleet.
To get the most out of the event, ALCA, on behalf of Australian youth teams, has facilitated coaching at Worlds venues since 2008.  The arrangement has been highly successful, 100% participation, with sailing families endorsing proposals to provide pre-regatta coaching, regatta support, team unity, uniforms.
The coach and resources similarly to Buenos Aires would need to be funded by sailing families. ALCA proposes to act on behalf of sailors as facilitator and administrator of finance. Once the team is announced, ALCA in consultation with travelling families would formulate a cost effective funding proposal for consideration by the families.
Please don’t wait until a sailor is ready, this is part of the journey. Nothing will replace the truly amazing experience and the challenge associated with representing Australia at a World Championship, a life changing event for the sailor and the family in support. Please discuss this with your coach and parents, follow the link ……….. and remember; the earlier International Laser Class Association receives your application, the better your chance for representation.
